This is the goal of awakening to languages, an innovating pedagogical approach that the EDILIC association seeks to promote.

Awakening to languages is not the teaching of a particular language. It aims – through pedagogical activities that enable schoolchildren to come in contact with audio and written corpuses in different languages – at the active discovery of the greatest diversity of languages in the world : languages from every country, linguistic varieties of any status that are used in the environment, first languages of children…

Awakening to languages can be adapted to every type of class group, linguistically homogeneous or not, right from kindergarten! The children develop both positive attitudes towards the cultural and linguistic diversity of the world in which they are to live, and the desire to learn various languages. They acquire knowledge and competences regarding languages in general (listening, observation…) that are useful in every type of learning, included that of the language of the school. As for the classes that are linguistically heterogeneous, awakening to languages is a pedagogical tool that enables the integration of the languages spoken by the schoolchildren.

Awakening to languages comes in the wake of the pedagogical works that were conducted in the 80’s in Great Britain by Professor Eric Hawkins around the concept of Language Awareness. The Evlang programme, which was supported by the European Union, developed the approach in different countries. Other programmes, in Europe and outside Europe, continued these efforts so much so that there exists now a solid theoretical basis and numerous teaching aids…

The international EDILIC association was set up in 2001 by partners of the Evlang programme. It welcomes any person willing to contribute to the promotion of awakening to languages, including, according to the latest developments, the promotion within integrated curricula implying other plural approaches of languages and cultures.

Teachers, teacher trainers, researchers, teaching material producers, parents, and citizens caring about education are all welcome…
